After a brief illness, Richard E. McCoy, 85, of Weston, with his sons and family by his side, went to Heaven where he was reunited with his wife, Betty (Smith) McCoy, whom he missed dearly. Richard was born in Lewis County on October 17, 1934: son of the late Guy McCoy and Aunie (Moody) McCoy.

Mr. McCoy is survived by three sons: Roger McCoy ( Meranda) and kids: Devan and Emma, Timothy McCoy and kids: Danyell and Shana and David McCoy and wife Mary and kids: Logan and Rylee. Richard had two sisters: the late Helen McCoy and her kids: David, Janet (deceased), Susan (deceased), Pam and Chris and the late Patty (McCoy) Butcher and late husband Alvy and their kids: Linda, Susan, Joe and Jim and sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Patty (Smith) Marsh and husband Karl. He had a special friend later in life that was thought of as a daughter: Pam.

Richard grew up and spent his whole life in Lewis County, as he graduated Weston High School in 1952. He served his country by voluntarily enlisting in the United States Army serving 6 months active duty then six years in the Reserves. Richard married Betty, the love of his life, in 1958, as they spent over 51 years of marriage together until her passing in 2009.

He was a a self -taught carpenter early in life as he talked about completing childhood home projects. That carried on as an adult where he built his home and many other projects. He taught his sons those skills as well. He was a dedicated family man, providing for them by working for Kroger’s for 44 years. Richard’s hobbies were crafting projects with wood, where he made furniture for his home and many other items in his wood shop.

Richard loved camping spending many vacations at Holly River State Park. He enjoyed taking his sons and grandchildren to the mountain streams to teach them skills for trout fishing and camping. Later in life, he loved to talk about those times. Richard was a supporter of local athletics as he assisted coaching youth sports and loved to go to Lewis County football and basketball games. For over 15 years he volunteered to haul the high school football equipment in his truck to away games to save the school expenses. Richard also loved to watch and listen to the WVU Mountaineers.

He loved to have family at his home and very much enjoyed initiating debates for conversation, especially with his sons. He and his wife enjoyed Fall and Winter days by the wood stove and spent many times with his family cutting wood. He was a Christian and faithfully attended Weston First Baptist Church where he has been a member for over 50 years.
