Obituary for Reverend William Jennings Bryan Gum

Reverend William Jennings Bryan Gum, 93, of Churchville Road Camden went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on the right hand fork of Freeman’s Creek in Lewis County on March 12, 1927: son of the late Eddie Ross Gum and Sadie Ellen (Chew) Gum. On January 18, 1957, he married Louise Grace (Phipps) Gum, who preceded him in death on April 21, 1999.

Reverend Gum is survived by three loving daughters: Betty F. Foster and husband Thomas R. of Weston, Joyce R. Miller of Camden and Dreama L. Hefner and husband Harley Allen of Weston. Bill was proud of his two grandsons: Luke A. Heckert and wife Vanessa and Jared Hefner and great grandchildren: Tori and Viktor. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife Louise, Reverend Gum was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles E., James and John L. Gum and two sisters: Bess Francis and Virginia Hitt.

Reverend Gum pastored Haleville Union Mission Church for 45 years. He was known for his love of the Lord, his keen wit and ability to tell a joke… one after another! Bill also retired from Hope Gas Company- Consolidated Natural Gas Company with 36 ½ years of service. Bill was a master craftsman and made some of the finest handmade violins in the country and took great pride in his work. He also tuned pianos and early in his working career repaired TVs and radios. His love of his Lord and fellow man made him friends all around this great state and several states around us. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Family and friends will be received at the Hardman Family Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Saturday, August 29, 2020 from 4-7 p.m. and due to Covid 19 limitations on gatherings, private family services will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. from the Hardman Family Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Dennis Estes and assisted by Pastor Mike Riffle officiating.
