Obituary for Peter John Edgerton MD

Peter John Edgerton, MD, 71, passed away on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020 in Highlands ARH Hospital of Prestonsburg, KY where he worked as their Director of Urology. He was born in Queens, NY on May 20, 1949: son of the late Edward Haywood and Grace Edgerton. On December 28th, 2019, he married Janet K. Lockard (Crawford) Edgerton, who survives.

He is also survived by one daughter: Christina Edgerton of Ivins, Utah, one step son: Gavin “Nick” Bakas and wife Catherine of Weston, WV, one grandson: Kyle Garrett Wood and one step granddaughter: Elizabeth Ashley Bakas Magers and husband Corey. Peter was an only child but treated his patients as family.

Dr. Edgerton started his working career as an accountant in New York following receiving his accounting degree at NYU and later started his career as a physician as an Adult and Pediatric Urologist following schooling from St. John University, Columbia, New York Medical College and his residency at North Shore Long Island Hospital in New York. Dr. Edgerton had a long and distinguished career in New York, Florida, Montana, West Virginia and Kentucky. His career ended as the Director of Urology at the hospital he passed away in, Highlands ARH Hospital of Prestonsburg, KY. He was also still an active physician at ARH Tug Valley Hospital of Williamson, KY, Preston Memorial Hospital of Kingwood, WV and Montgomery General Hospital of Montgomery, WV. He also worked 7 years at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital of Weston, WV. Dr. Edgerton was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a physician. He belonged to several medical groups from several states and nationally as well.

Dr. Edgerton’s hobbies included all types of cars, especially foreign ones, gun collecting with his favorites being pistols and animals-dogs and cats but mostly cats. Peter loved clothes and shoes and had suits and shoes of all colors and types. His family said he should have been a fashion designer on the side. He was a social member at Pete Dye Golf Course even though he was not a golfer. He enjoyed eating and socializing with the members. He was a very giving person. He would give to many charities but his and Janet’s favorite was Relay for Life and they were very active with it.

Dr. Edgerton’s wishes to be cremated were honored and memorial services will be held in West Virginia and Kentucky at a later date. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Dr. Edgerton may be expressed at hardmanfamilyfuneralhome.com.
