Obituary for Elma Jean Woofter
Elma Jean Woofter, age 94, of Troy passed away peacefully after a long illness at the Genesis-Glenville Nursing Home on Friday, April 10, 2020. She was born in Troy, WV on February 20, 1926, the daughter of the late Dr. H. Blaine Woofter and Esta Farnsworth Woofter. She was preceded in death by an infant brother: Harry Clay Woofter and many first cousins, and a special double first cousin: Lyda Farnsworth.
She is survived by many second cousins, a cousin by marriage, Betty Farnsworth, wife of the late Lyda Farnsworth of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina and close friends Lucy Ann West and Alice Rastle Taylor.
Elma Jean was a loyal and dedicated member of the Troy Baptist Church for 82 years, a member of the Glenville Chapter of Eastern Star, Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gama, and Alpha Phi Sorority. She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High in Charleston, WV. She had a B.S. from WVU and a M.S. from the University of Tennessee, and advanced graduate study from Cornell University, Ohio State, Penn State, and Merrill Palmer Institute.
She began her teaching career as a vocational home economics teacher at Tanner High School in 1947 and moved to Troy High School in 1951. She went to Glenville State College in the fall of 1954 when the vocational home economics program was introduced. Elma Jean was the only GSC instructor to teach home management and live in the home management house. She also started and was the teacher of the GSC Nursery School for 33 years. She retired from GSC after 33 years. She served 39 years in the field of education.
Elma Jean was a great neighbor, a very giving person and a good and faithful servant of the Lord.
